Why the Delta Plus Variant is the worst till date

The second wave of COVID-19 was a tragedy for many. The cases have dropped and that feels temporarily relieving. But as we have started easing restrictions, the Delta Plus variant (a mutated version of Delta variant) of the virus has emerged, and poses a great threat to us.

Why is this concerning?

The Delta Plus variant is a super-spreader as it is 60% more contagious than the previous variants. The IMCR (Indian Council of Medical Research) states that the transmission capacity of the variant has increased drastically which means that it will spread faster from person to person.

Epidemiologists believe that the Delta plus variant is the most dangerous one so far. It affects the lungs of the patient. With the third wave approaching, we must take as much precautions as possible.

But how will I know if I have the Delta Plus variant

You cannot say for sure on your own if you are the victim of this variant, only a proper testing can confirm that. But top virologists have advised to take immediate consultation with your doctor and get yourself tested if you notice the symptoms mentioned below.

  • Headache
  • Chest pain
  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Skin rash
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Diarrhoea
  • Discolouration of fingers and toes.
  • Loss of appetite
  • Stomach ache
  • Nausea

But the must be a way to prevent this right?

Of course there is! While a tiny virus that has travelled the world may be difficult to escape, it’s not impossible to prevent it either. Many have done it since over a year, you can do it too. Here are some ways in which you can prevent the virus from entering you.

  • Avoid going out unless it is absolutely necessary
  • Wear a double mask when you step outside your house
  • Disinfect any outfit that was worn while you were outside your house
  • Disinfect any item you purchased/had delivered
  • Avoid touching any surfaces when you are outside.
  • Take your footwear out
  • Use sanitizer every time you touch anything.
  • Wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds if you do not use a sanitizer
  • Maintain a distance of 6 feet with people
  • The one that trumps them all, GET YOURSELF VACCINATED as soon as possible.

What is the treatment provided?

None of the existing treatments have proved to be effective towards the mutated variant. There is no sure shot way to treat this variant yet. The doctors and working round the clock to do all they can with the limited knowledge we have about the rapidly mutating virus. Therefore, the best you can do is to get vaccinated and reduce the severity of the virus.
